About Robin

On graduating from the University of Southampton with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, I knew that I wanted to work in the world of web development. I found myself a job at a small but engaging E-Learning company based in Winchester. Working as part of a small team of programmers and designers I developed and honed my skills in PHP, Ruby, JavaScript, MySQL and standards compliant HTML. I also branched out into XSL, delivering an award winning website for the Science Museum in London. Most of my time was spent coding in Ruby on Rails with the occassional smaller project using PHP.

Nearly 4 years later I moved to a larger Web Agency who had just started using the Symfony PHP framework. With large similarities between Symfony and Rails I settled into the team quickly, working on projects for some very big clients such as Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, MTV, Sky and the Subaru World Rally Team. Exposure to working with high traffic websites helped me to focus my development techniques, sticking to processes such as DRY, and KISS.

Eventually I decided that it was time to branch out on my own, and so here I am today! I have a passion for coding standards and enjoy both frontend (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) and backend (PHP/Symfony/MySQL) development. I believe symantics are very important when coding HTML and I always bear in mind accessibility, conforming to W3C WAI level AA and AAA where possible. Using Prototype and jQuery JavaScript libraries I create engaging and visually appealing websites. With some experience in Systems Administration I know my way around Debian, Ubuntu, Apache and Nginx. I have experience with performance tuning Apache, PHP and MySQL.  I also dabble in iOS development. I built the Urbanonetwork website!

When I'm not working on websites or webapps you can often find me reading about or tinkering with cars. I currently own a 2010 Nissan GT-R Black Edition which makes me spend far too much money on petrol and tyres. I would love to build myself a cheap drift car. I also enjoy photography and would like to get my hands on a Canon 5D MK-II.
